These were not the stories one typically associates with the gay community-you know what I'm talking about here- the Will and Grace, Queer Eye for the Straight Guy set. The authors we featured told their stories in earnest. Narratives of people who for the most part did not lead upper class, lavish lifestyles but who lived their lives and worked in places where they were often the only out people among anyone that they knew. This included environments that many readers might assume would not be as supportive to gay folk.
While that part of the site has been dormant, and we haven't updated it in years, the stories are just as powerful. Sure some of those rural or working class folks went on to be professional atheletes or actors, but just as many chose to remain back on the farm or pushing that big rig down the Interstate. Simply because that's who they are and the best way they've decided to live thier lives.
This site celebrates the courage it takes to stay put and be yourself, regardless where that may happen to be. Today, we add another guest blogger...
His name is James Jetty and he's an original contributer to Witnesses from the Circle. The shot was taken from his truck. To learn more about James, read some of his older posts by clicking here:http://www.highmountainranch.com/witnesses/witnessesfromthecircle.html
The World is Forgetting
For many people, all you have to say is September 2001, and they remember the horrible news that shocked the world. But do you remember what happened in October of 1998. Do you remember the name Matthew Shepard?
I still, to this day, can not rember where I was when I first heard the news about Matthew. However what happened that day still strikes fear into me. I am not a small person but I know it easily could have been me. I still rember watching the news and crying.
Today, more than ever we need to remember that this can and still does happen. Now, we are reaching the time to elect a new president. We must bring to light the ever present realization of hate in today's scocity. It is time to fight the hatred-not just against the GLBT community but to all who are vulnerable and living in this country.
It is wrong to sit back and belive that some one else will take up the fight. This country was formed by the people fighting for their rights. And if you do not fight for your rights they will and are being taken from you.
So in honor of the memory of a young man that was brutally taken from this earth, let's all do our part and fight. One person can touch the heart of millions.
