Last night, traveling north on Idaho Highway 41, about 5 miles north of Blanchard, the temperature dipped to minus 21. That was at 10:00 pm, with no cloud cover. I'm sure later in the night it turned even colder. I struggled to keep my truck from gelling up, pouring power serve into the truck like it was water. As I pointed the truck home, racing beneath the shadow of Hoodoo Mountain, I drove tall, full moon snowblind. That moon she was something, her hopscotching brilliance and brief hide and go seek with Ponderosas made headlights an option, and under her gaze the snow sparkled like crystal. It doesn't get this cold that often up here, maybe once a year, but when it does the ice presents a never ending challenge. As does anything that runs on diesel.
