This dug out, the former foundation is all that remains. Along with rattlesnakes, sage, cactus, and the ever present wind. I hadn't been back since Billie passed. Yet for some reason when I returned from Santa Fe, I had to go back. I had to touch the earth and breathe in the sage, the dry air-all the while hoping to hear a voice...any voice really.
The pictures from my last trek are still up on www.highmountainranch.com . Click on the photo's link. Look under 2001. See for yourself Billies last great road trip.
While we poked around, this time we didn't find much in the way of artifacts. I remembered an old Peerless Model T Radiator front, which we grabbed...as rusted as it was, I found it oddly reassuring to know it was still there laying among the cactus.
Oh yeah, I also found a small ancient container for vaseline.
Now that is something to treasure.
