The Real Legacy Begins...

So the let the investigations begin...

President Bush has now lost all of what little still remained of his political cover. The Supreme Court had already rebuked him in two of their rulings. Now comes both houses of the legislative branch to undo recently passed laws that sought to codify the most extreme abuses of executive priviledges-abuses heretofar unseen in our nation's history.

Christopher Dodd is sponsoring legislation to revise the aggregious torture/due process/secret prisons policies of the administration. Even their hastily enacted provisions to protect administration officials from criminal prosecution and back date the administration's illegal behavior will be addressed.

In other strange news...

Many blog commentators have also noticed this strangeness: The Democrats don't yet have control over the House, remember Denny Hastert is still Speaker of the House until January, but the press and the pundit class are already proclaiming that "Nancy Pelosi has suffered mortal wounds and significant losses to her leadership credibility" as she fields squabbles and leadership races from within her party.

Huh?

Isn't that what usually happens when people compete for Leadership roles?

Why doesn't anyone in DC question these sorts of strangely premature conclusions reached by fellow members of the press? And why are so many people in DC jumping on this crazy bandwagon?

That the mainstream media seems to be exploiting these natural and understandable (if not totally necessary, inter-party conflicts) arising over Democratic leadership contests for the House Leadership, while also ignoring the far more bruising battles occuring among the Republicans, is just bizarre.

Regardless of the blogs, with the recent accountability related election mandates, it would seem the Beltway class remains intent on endlessly distracting us with fluff and meaningless commentary. That the Washington Post, CNN, FOX News, and the New York Times would engage in this behavior while both the situation in Afghanistan and Iraq are so pressing is the root of our current mess.

Bin Laden has gained significant control in Pakistan, which has Nuclear weapons. That is the stuff of our worst nightmares. It should be the stuff of headlines.

Next week a major book comes out that will report that an Al Qeada super spy managed to infilitrate not only the FBI but the military. (The main subject of the book, naturally takes issue with the premise of the book (http://patrickjfitzgerald.blogspot.com/2006/11/find-this-book-listed-under-fiction.html#links ).

Yet these folks focus their attention on Pelosi and are already castrating the Speaker of the House before she assumes her position.

How many mushroom clouds will it take to get them to refocus and prioritize their coverage?

Meanwhile "President Bush Visits Asia" is turning out to be one of the most embarrassing episodes in US foreign policy history. His comments yesterday in Viet Nam about Iraq are the kinds of things one would expect a first grader to say.

"We'll succeed unless we quit."

Uh certainly that sort of brilliance could use further scrutiny.
