Roughly 12,000 years ago this gorge was completely filled with ice, forming a dam that created "Lake Missoula". As the last Ice Age ended, the glaciers receded, and the land underneath re-emerged, the region played a thousand year tug of war battling giant floods that would eventually shape most of western Montana, northern Idaho, Oregon and Washington.
